All of our websites we design here at Nealon Web Designs are CSS/XHTML based. Well, except for the flashed based sites. When we tell this to potential clients we are often asked, “What is CSS?” Well, this article will by no means be the most informative article ever written on CSS, let us give you a brief introduction to our favorite way to build sites.

CSS Style Sheets

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. When used in conjunction with HTML/XHTML these style sheets make styling a website’s elements and updating them very fast and effective. The CSS used to style a site is contained in a file in your site’s directory. This file is called a style sheet. The pages in your website can either link to or import. When a web page links to that external file it inherits all the attributes of that CSS style sheet. In each site, there is usually a very limited number of style sheets, one or two, that all the webpages link to. This means that changing the styling of elements is easy. To change the styling of an element, only a change to the style sheet is made, every webpage that links to it inherits those changes. This saves time because you don’t have to go through all your pages and update them. Simply update the CSS style sheet and every page gets the change!

What do you mean, “Style an Element”?

When we build a website, we style almost every element in the website. Paragraphs, headers, links, page division (divs) and sometimes even images all get styled. To style something is to use CSS to tell the web browser you are using, how to display each element. Lets use paragraphs as an example. A paragraph can be styled in many ways. We can tell the browser which font to display paragraphs with, what size the font should be, what color paragraphs should be and so on. To tell your webpage how to display each element is to style that element.

We love CSS!

When choosing a web designer, make sure they use CSS as much as possible. There are instances (such as tabular data) where CSS might not be the best, but 98% of the time you want CSS being used. CSS saves time which saves you money.

All of the sites we design take advantage of CSS. Allow us to show you how our CSS based websites are superior to many of our competitors’ designs. Contact Nealon Web Designs today by filling out our contact form or calling us Toll Free at 866-606-3977.

Okay, so you have a great web site made by Nealon Web Designs, now what? Well, unless you hired us to market your web site for you the next step is to get the word out about your web site yourself. Here are a few quick pointers on how to do that.

Put your URL on EVERYTHING! Your business cards, all of your promotional materials…everywhere.

Talk to other businesses in your area and ask about ‘link swaping’. You can link to their web site from yours and they could link to yours from theirs.

Put a sign in your store front with your URL on it. This way everybody driving or walking by can notice it. They may not have time to stop in at that moment but after seeing your site they may visit it after arriving home.

Send out postcards promoting your new web site. You can mail these to current customers, other business or just blanket an entire town with them. You can also deliver them door to door. Hiring a teenage relative to do this for a few bucks an hour is money well spent.

BLOG! Do you have a blog? Talk about your new site in it. Mention services you offer, new products, sales and more! Do you need a blog? Contact Nealon Web Designs about our blogs for businesses sevices.

Okay, there are a few ways you can start to promote your web site. Can you think of any others? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Keep in mind that your web site will only work if people are visiting it. Promote it in everything you do! If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, contact us about our online marketing services. You will find that it is money well spent!

Until next week!!
